BRIMM History
The seeds of BRIMM were sown in 2004 at the Diwali get-together hosted by Anand Pingale, in the presence and agreement of a few Marathi families. Prashant Karmalkar took the lead towards setting up the BRIMM, with a first meeting at the New Farm garden.
BRIMM was set up keeping in mind two goals – firstly, to keep the spirit of being a Maharashtrian alive amongst the Marathi families present in Brisbane, as well as make youngsters and children aware of our Marathi cultural diversity so that they could preserve it
through generations. Secondly, develop a support system for every new Marathi family or student that comes to Brisbane, so that they can easily reach out for anything that would be required when they move to a new country.

BRIMM got its name keeping in mind that it would need to feature as the top most result in all search engines by Maharashtrians moving outside their country to Queensland or Brisbane. What started as merely 18 members in 2004-2005, is today a ______+ member group, which has its own Constitution, website as well as a formal bank account. From celebrating Ganesh festival with great pomp and show to enjoying the festivities of Diwali, all these festivals were celebrated with great style, in the true Maharashtrian way, maintaining and preserving the cultural elements.

In addition to the cultural events, there was also care taken to get Public Liability Insurance done for all its members. Members got together and put together the institution of BRIMM with physical, mental and many a times, financial assistance as well. BRIMM was soon incorporated with a separate identity in 2006-2007!

And then there has been no looking back. From inviting artists from Marathi cultural arts, to celebrating festivals together, to putting up drama productions in Marathi, all at their own expense, BRIMM grew in strength year on year. In 2007, BRIMM was aptly represented at the Australia Marathi Sammelan, where members participated in singing, dancing as well as in a drama production. In 2009, youngsters put up a fantastic Diwali program where students
visiting from India also participated.

Over the years, BRIMM has crossed many a milestone. BRIMM became a member of the FICQ, got its first woman president in 2010-2011, invited famous magician Raghuvir from Pune to enthral the audience – both adults and kids alike, as well as famous Tabla artiste Dheeraj Shreshtha. BRIMM was invited to be a part of the Queensland Premier to represent the Diwali social being organized at the Parliament House. Thereafter, the Queensland State Government contributed funds towards the celebration of the Ganpati festival. Famous  artists from Marathi cinema such as Vandana Joshi and Atul Kulkarni were invited to interact and discuss with the BRIMM members.

By 2011, BRIMM had established an identity of its own and was being viewed as the point of contact for all Marathi families moving to Queensland. But there was need for improvement. A huge step in that direction was when they got their own phone number which would be accessible by any and every one reaching out for any kind of support and help. When the need was sensed, to instil the love for Marathi from a very young age, Marathi Shala, was started. This got tremendous response from parents, children and grandparents as well. The response for all activities under the aegis of BRIMM got excellent response and every volunteer was also recognized for his/her contribution. BRIMM had to now have a brand logo and central location, convenient for most people to attend.

BRIMM had now become a brand to reckon with. In 2015, a family picnic was organized which got an overwhelming response of almost 250 people. This tradition of organizing an annual picnic, is carried forward even till date. BRIMM started the ‘Meet and Greet’ initiative to address all the queries of families and students moving from India to Brisbane. BRIMM also organized its own Dhol Tasha group, a matter of true pride for every Maharashtrian. They also started showing famous movies every two months as well as started participating in the 15 th August India Parade. Famous singers Rahul Deshpande and Mahesh Kale were invited to perform for the BRIMM members, which got an excellent response. Every Ganpati and Diwali celebration provided a platform for local talent to be showcased, thus encouraging Marathi performers. Sankranti also started being celebrated amongst all the women.

BRIMM has made a special place for itself in the hearts of the many Maharashtrians across Queensland.
